CLR James

C. L. R. “Nello” James was a Trinidadian historian, writer, activist and socialist thinker whose work influenced generations of intellectuals, artists and political movements across the Black diaspora.

Best known for The Black Jacobins and his writings on colonialism, democracy, sport and culture, James championed education as a tool for liberation and collective empowerment.

The naming of the Nello James Centre in his honour in 1971, supported by Vanessa Redgrave, ensured his legacy lived on not only through books and ideas, but through a physical space dedicated to Black radical education, community care and political thought.

Rekindling Nello James continues this legacy today.
